چکیده

This paper utilizes the best available quality data from multiple sources to develop consistent surface boundary conditions (SBCs) for mesoscale regional climate model (RCM) applications. The primary SBCs include 1) fields of soil characteristic (bedrock depth, and sand and clay * Corresponding author address: Dr. Xin-Zhong Liang, Illinois State Water Survey, University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, 2204 Griffith Dr., Champaign, IL 61820–7495. Use of Sensor Imagery Data for Surface Boundary Conditions in Regional Climate Modeling

Mesoscale climate and hydrology modeling studies have increased in sophistication and are being run at increasingly higher resolutions. Data resolution sufficiently finer than that of the computational model is required not only to support sophisticated linkages and process interactions at small scales but to assess their cumulative impact at larger scales. The global distributions at fine spat...

Effects of Soil Moisture Heterogeneity on Boundary Layer Flow with Coupled Groundwater, Land-surface, and Mesoscale Atmospheric Modeling

Mesoscale atmospheric models currently rely on an integrated land-surface model to provide fluxes of heat, momentum, and moisture from the land surface to the atmosphere. While improvements have been made by tuning land-surface models for a variety of test cases, current models are limited to vertical transport in a shallow soil column. They are thus unable to capture lateral transport of soil ...

MODIS-Derived Boundary Conditions for a Mesoscale Climate Model: Application to Irrigated Agriculture in the Euphrates Basin

In arid and semiarid parts of the world, evaporation from irrigated fields may significantly influence humidity, near-surface winds, and precipitation. Using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Terra imagery from summer and autumn 2000 the authors attempt to improve the realism of a regional climate model (the fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University–NCAR Mesoscale Model...

Combined global climate model and mesoscale model simulations of Antarctic climate

Simulations of high southern latitudes with the high-resolution, limited-area Penn State/NCAR mesoscale model, version 4 (MM4), examine the impact of a moist physics parameterization and the success of a one-way nesting inside the global NCAR community climate model, version 2 (CCM2). Discretization is by 100 km resolution in the horizontal and i 5 or i 6 levels in the vertical. initiai and bou...

Evidence that local land use practices influence regional climate, vegetation, and stream flow patterns in adjacent natural areas

We present evidence that land use practices in the plains of Colorado influence regional climate and vegetation in adjacent natural areas in the Rocky Mountains in predictable ways. Mesoscale climate model simulations using the Colorado State University Regional Atmospheric Modelling System (RAMS) projected that modifications to natural vegetation in the plains, primarily due to agriculture and...
